BIOGRAPHY

Matthew is a New York-based, New Zealand-born music director, composer, and pianist whose music has been heard around the United States, New Zealand, and the world.


Matthew is currently a Teaching Artist (Music Direction) for Broadway's Roundabout Theatre Company as well as a music director and pianist for off-Broadway's Gallery Players and popular NYC cabaret company, The Randy Andys. Matthew has worked regularly with the international entertainment company Royal Caribbean Productions and various regional theaters around the United States. Recent appearances in the New York City area include with the Long Island Concert Orchestra at the Tilles Center and popular cabaret venues Don't Tell Mama and Pangea NYC


Recently, Matthew was the Resident Music Director for Weathervane Theatre's 2020 Fall Season of Little Shop of Horrors and The World Goes Round, which was featured by the New York Times. Other regional credits include productions of Next to Normal, Man of La Mancha (Tibbits Opera House), The Sound of Music (Northern Stage) Mary Poppins, The Music Man and Little Shop of Horrors (Post Playhouse), and work in Royal Caribbean Production's Miami studios on Hairspray (Symphony of the Seas) and Grease (Harmony and Independence of the Seas). For his work on Next To Normal Matthew was nominated for a BroadwayWorld.com regional theatre award for Best Music Direction. Music direction credits in New Zealand include We Will Rock You, Sister Act, The Last Five Years, Little Women, Ragtime, The Events, and Working. Other credits as associate music director and pianist include Les Misérables, Wicked, Jesus Christ Superstar, Chicago, Mary Poppins, Legally Blonde, Hairspray, Mamma Mia!, Evita, Monty Python's Spamalot, The Phantom of the Opera and Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story. Matthew also conducted The Vocal Collective on their 2019 US tour to Carnegie Hall. 


Matthew holds a Bachelor of Music (Composition) and Bachelor of Laws with Honours from the University of Canterbury, and an ATCL diploma in piano performance from Trinity College, London. He has also lectured in music theory, composition, keyboards and musical theatre at the University of Canterbury School of Music and Ara Institute of Canterbury. Matthew is an alumni of the New York University Summer Film Scoring workshop.
